 September Dialogue Dinner

We invite you to join us for an interactive dinner, movie and discussion on September 26th 6:30pm at our event center in Greer. This event can hold up to 60 people and is on a RSVP of first come first serve basis.

We will be hearing from Lynne Waheeba as she presents: Syria: The Hidden Hope along with Dr Aaron Simmons as he shares his new book: "Camping with Kierkegaard: Faithfulness as a Way of Life"

1campAbout the Film:

Syria: The Hidden Hope is an interactive docuseries exploring the reality of living in war. With 21 audio interviews and 9 video interviews, you will get an insider perspective on the Syrian revolution and its aftermath. The aim is to share people’s stories in a humanitarian light away from the noise of politics. This work is about the forgotten humans whose stories were lost amidst the chaos of war.

1campAbout the Book:

“In this book, Aaron Simmons takes us on a trip to the mountains to reflect on the meaning of life. In a world too often defined by a quest for “success” that leaves us empty, alone, and anxious, Simmons seeks “faithfulness“ outdoors with thinkers and artists from Aristotle to Kierkegaard, Sartre to Anne Lamott, and Kendrick Lamar to Donovan Woods. Simmons invites us to rethink what it means to make
choices, take risks, be alone and silent while cultivating friendships, and to find our calling by facing our vulnerability. In the end, Simmons shows that faithfulness is more than a religious concept. It is about living a life of risk with direction.”

Sunday, October 1
Hosted by Independent Dialogue Coordinator Catherine Fleming-Bruce

Join us on a discussion on public attitudes toward access to voting. It will focus on the Congressional District 1 (Charleston area) redistricting plan which will be heard by the United States Supreme Court on October 11.

This is an opportunity to discuss perspectives on the vote, why one person/one vote is important to citizenship, the evolution of this Supreme Court case, and different ways people are making their voices heard on the decision. South Carolinians will be traveling to DC for the hearing and the audience will be invited to join them.

Invited guests include representatives of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and the Upstate Action Alliance.

Alexander v. SCNAACP, part II: Amicus briefs as 'voices' that are part of the dialogue.

Friday, October 6
Hosted by Independent Dialogue Coordinator Catherine Fleming-Bruce

This conversation will be a review of the Amicus briefs, or 'friend of the Court' submissions that support various sides of the case. We will discuss them as illustrative of the dialogue that takes place in a Court case, and provides a way for the voices of a variety of actors, including community organizations and others, to provide them perspective for the public and the jurors to hear.

Cal Duran of Denver, CO joined our Dia de los Muertos session to share colorful snapshots of his ofrendas as well as his insights for taking time and making space for those who passed before us. With over 17 years of creating community ofrendas, Cal brought a wealth of knowledge from both his own experience as well as wisdom from his mentor Rita Flores.

Elders & Animals!
Pictured with his mentor Rita Flores, Cal told us he visited with his 92 year old elder each week prior to their collaboration on the large ofrenda behind them. This type of connection with elders is important for everyone, he shared with us. Animals too share a special space with us, and his final ofrenda of the 2023 season is in memory of a beloved giraffe at the Denver Zoo, who passed away earlier this year.
