"Children in Need, Children Ignored" by John DeGarmo.
Following this video, we will have two guest facilitators: Sandy Westin, a Volunteer Ambassador at Shared Hope International and David White from Fostering Great Ideas. Both will help with audience Q&A as well as continued dialogue.

TEDTalk Dialogue Night January 28th, 2020
The Atlantic Institute wants to thank Chris Heavner, Interfaith Partners, our guests, and the Hughes Main Library for making our first TED discussion of the year a success! “Reconnecting with Compassion” was a great way to start our series of TED discussions and everyone in attendance was engaged with Krista Tippett’s fascinating Talk.
“Reconnecting with Compassion” introduced the concept of compassion being viewed as a weakness and challenged that assertion by explaining why compassion could be seen instead as strength. Being compassionate and willing to try to understand others helps us connect with each other on a much deeper level, and we hope our guests in attendance will walk away from this event with that in mind.
Chris Heavner led the discussion and helped shine the light on why compassion is strength by sharing his own experiences and allowing attendees to do the same. He introduced guests to the Charter of Compassion which we all read and discussed. The Charter of Compassion promotes embracing compassion, giving us the tools to accept people of different backgrounds with love and kindness. We are so grateful to continue this series of discussions in 2020. Stay tuned as we begin preparing for the next one!

"The Failure of Success" by Furman professor Dr. Aaron Simmons.
J. Aaron Simmons, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at Furman University. He holds a Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University and has previously been a member of the faculty at The University of the South (Sewanee) and Hendrix College. Specializing in Philosophy of Religion and 19th and 20th Century European Philosophy, Simmons is the author or editor of 9 books, including God and the Other, Kierkegaard’s God and the Good Life, and, most recently, Christian Philosophy: Conceptions, Continuations, and Challenges, which was published by Oxford University Press in 2019. A popular teacher and speaker, Simmons often delivers keynote addresses to academic, business, and community events. He is currently the Vice-President of the Søren Kierkegaard Society and former President of the South Carolina Society for Philosophy. Simmons has been married to Vanessa for 18 years and they have a 10 year old son, Atticus.

TEDTalk Dialogue Night: October 15th, 2019
“Many Ways to Make a Family” -Dr. Tami Blumenfield
The Atlantic Institute just enjoyed an evening at Hughes Main Library as we explored the topic of Dr. Tami Blumenfield’s TEDTalk “Many Ways to Make a Family” which focused on the structure of families and the Na people of southwest China. This was a fascinating look at a family model that is unfamiliar to western culture. The dialogue shared afterword by all in attendance shows that many of us struggle with balancing work and family life. Learning about the differences between a Matriarchal society and what westerners consider a “traditional” Patriarchal family from an anthropologist with real first-hand experience was absolutely refreshing. The comparisons drawn were extremely interesting and everyone walked away from the evening with the question on their minds: “How can we be more supportive of non-traditional family structures?” We would like to express our deep thanks to Dr. Tami Blumenfield for guiding us on this cultural journey, all our attendees, and everyone who made this educational night possible.

We would like to thank JD Daniel for leading the discussion for us on Septembers TED Talk, "What Makes us Special?" Participants received nametags to fill out with what makes them unique instead of their name and after watching the video the audience took turns discussing the points in the video and how it related to their uniqueness that they picked. The discussion was a great dialogue topic for young and old in the room to share.

We than Jonatha JD Daniel for sharing with us his TED Talk on Bullying. We had great conversations with the adults, parents and children in the audience on how they feel and how they have handled these issues in the past when they have come up and how they can handle it differently using the tools that he gave.
