About the Speaker:

Dr. Bruce Yandle writes and speaks on the economy and economic issues. Dean Emeritus of Clemson University’s College of Business & Behavioral Science where he taught economics for 31 years, he is now distinguished adjunct fellow with George Mason University’s Mercatus Center. While serving as Alumni Distinguished Professor of Economics at Clemson, he taught in graduate programs in France, Italy, Germany, and the Czech Republic. He is author/editor of 17 books, including Bootleggers and Baptists: How Economic Forces and Moral Persuasion Interact to Shape Regulatory Politics, is a contributor to The Hill, USA Today, Investors’ Business Daily, the Washington Examiner and author of The Economic Situation, a quarterly newsletter distributed by George Mason University. He has been recognized for his leadership in promoting the free market system by Washington’s Competitive Enterprise Institute and the Association of Private Enterprise Education.

Dr. Yandle served in Washington on two occasions, first as a senior economist on the White House staff during the Ford and Carter Administrations and later as Executive Director of the Federal Trade Commission in the Reagan Administration. Prior to entering a career in university teaching, he was in the industrial machinery business for 15 years. Bruce and his wife, Dot, live in Clemson, just across from the train station.

Turkey Under Erdogan: A Retrospective Four Years Later by Abdülhamit Bilici

The Atlantic Institute of South Carolina and the Columbia World Affairs Council invites you to join a virtual program on Zoom to discuss the changes in Turkey from the past several years. We wish to closely examine the effect on democracy, human rights, economy, and international and Kurdish relations. We will be featuring a prominent newspaper executive as a speaker, Mr. Abdülhamit Bilici, who was exiled for his political opinions and is now living in Washington, DC.

biliciAbout the Speaker:

Abdülhamit Bilici is a Turkish newspaper executive in exile following recent political turmoil and government oppression of the media in Turkey. Before leaving the country, Bilici served as editor-in-chief of the newspaper Zaman Daily, the largest daily newspaper in Turkey. He also was Chief Executive Officer of its English-language version, Today’s Zaman. Bilici also served as general director of Cihan News Agency and as editor of Aksiyon Weekly Magazine.

Starting his career at the Zaman Daily as a correspondent, Bilici worked as an editor at Aksiyon Magazine between 1995-1997, as foreign news editor at Zaman Daily between 1998-2001, as general editor at Zaman Daily between 2002-2008 and as general director of Cihan News Agency and as the editor-in-chief of the Zaman Newspaper and is a columnist for Zaman and Today’s Zaman dailies.

Bilici is an expert on Turkish politics and is widely sought as a speaker on the ongoing political crisis. He is editor of the book Why Turkey? which combines different perspectives on Turkey-EU relations.
